Scrapyard of mine

Seriously, I don’t have any interest on Vista. Why such newest technology is so resource hungry ? But thats it! A little man opinion would never changes the world. Microsoft has deciced to discountinued XP and moving to Vista.

Like or dislike, I must aside my personal opinion. I should hold a patient on Vista (I should endure it…). Soon or later, my boss will ask me to deal with Vista.

So, I must prepare..

Lucky, my Compaq Presario V2388TU 1,67GHz 2GB RAM has enough resources to load a Vista installation.

This is my first note concerning of Vista performance tweak. It may be too late for some users… hehehe But first, you should know what makes Vista run so slow on your machines. Don’t forget to examine it!.

Here is my 20’s cents :

 

1. Performance Option
You may use the "extreme way" by using "Adjust for the best performance". As for me, I still love a litle bit of appearance. And these are my "Custom" option :

• - Show preview and filters in folder
• - Smooth edges of screen fonts
• - Use a background image ..
• - Use drop shadows ..
• - Use visual styles ..

2. SWAP
Create another partition to hold the swap. Make sure it is formatted in FAT/FAT32. NTFS has more complex filesystem. Size is another matter. May be you can use this = Physical RAM x 3/2 = SWAP. In my case it will need 3GB SWAP.


3. NTFS
I hope these settings still works now :

C:\>fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 1
C:\>fsutil behavior set mftzone 2
C:\>fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 1

4. Power
I’m sacrifying my battery life for performance. Objection ? Well, somehow I will managed the reversed action…
I choose "High performance" in "Select Power Plan"

5. Services
I disabled a lot of unnecessary services for me (maybe different from yours !). Here is the list (Sorry, i’m too lazy to type it one by one)!

6. Startup
Type and execute "msconfig" in command prompt. You may minimize a number item of startup (and also startup services)

7. Windows Feature
Go to Control Panel » Programs » Programs and Features » Turn Windows features on or off
I only need these two :

• - Group Policy Preference CSE
• - Print Services » Internet Print Services

 

 That’s it ! I know some of you has anoter experience… I like to hear from you guys ! (Now I’m back to my dark-screen console..hehehe…)
